Installing and Modifying RAS PPPoE v0.98

RAS PPPoE is a Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (click here for definition) Protocol designed for Windows 2000 and then ported to Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/NT4. This is a freeware item that is really easy to install, you'll just have to understand some basics with the Network properties on a Windows 98/ME platform.

Note: If you do not have the following you cannot install RAS PPPoE:

  • Windows98/98SE/ME Install CD (provided with your computer)
  • Network Card Install software (provided with your Network Card)
  • RAS PPPoE (available on our website http://www.wincom.net/dsl/software/)

Here are some items that you'll see in the installed network components list.

  • The Client icon is used for setting up the computer to connect to others on the network.
  • The Adapter is the equipment which services will be sent thought.
  • A Protocol is a "language" a computer uses. Computers must use the same protocol to communicate (for the Internet it's TCP/IP).

RAS PPPoE install and modifications can take place by Right Clicking on the Network Neighbourhood or My Network Places. With your Left mouse button click on Properties.

Windows 95/98/SE
Windows ME

You'll find yourself in the Network window and in the Configuration tab. To install RAS PPPoE click on Add..., on the new screen highlight Protocol by clicking on it. Then click on Add... to proceed.

After clicking on Add..., You'll be given a screen similar to the screen shot below. Since RAS PPPoE was created after the development of Windows you'll need to click on Have Disk... Specify the location where you've extracted the RAS PPPoE (i.e. the self-extracting package extracts to c:\pppoe95b\) if you choose Browse... once the directory is found containing RAS PPPoE it does not matter which of the three INF files you select, Windows will automatically pick the right one later.
Click OK. Select PPP over Ethernet Protocol and click OK.

Before you finalize things with an OK, then a restart. I suggest looking at the PPP over Ethernet Protocol -> Network Adapter's Properties. We have found that check marking Override Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU) and reducing its value to 1470 or lower offers the best performance with ADSL. Click OK.

Windows9X machines tend to take a while to boot up with this Network configuration. The reason is because the operating system is looking for a networked computer to assign the Network Card settings (DHCP) at this time you're Internet access will also pause until the operating system stops looking.

So two solutions are available:

  1. Assign your network card an IP address and a Subnet Mask (i.e. IP 192.168.0.1 and Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0) for the TCP/IP -> Network Adapter
  2. The other is to Remove TCP/IP -> Network Adapter

Another item to look at is the Primary Network Logon. When set to Client for Microsoft Networks you'll be prompted for a Network Username and Password when you start your computer. To turn that off, change the Primary Network Logon to Windows Logon and this will bypass the Network username and password question and make for a quicker computer start-up.

If you're unsure of uncomfortable with this set-up and require guidance please contact your Network Administrator or Contact Us for assistance.
